WYBLE WOOD #9

__________

Hand Gun Cases

Three hand gun cases, holding two guns each.
Hand dovetailed corners joints, floating top panels, locking clasps.
Shown here in unfinished condition, as owner will finish as desired.

-------------------- Construction Details --------------------
The floating top and the bottom ride in slots cut into the sides. The top panel extends over the top of all sides. Another slot is cut halfway through the front and sides (not back) to allow for the box to be cut into a top and bottom after being "glued up" and will result in a "lip".

Here is the profile of the floating top showing the part that floats in the slot and the wider part that will extend to the outer box size.

You can see how the top extends past the sides when assembled. It will be trimmed after "glue up". The tails and pins are cut slightly proud. They will be trimmed flush at the same time as the top.

Another view showing the floating top.

Three boxes ready for final finish.

Detail of lip resulting from cutting halfway through the front and side pieces before the dovetail corner joints are glued. After the dovetails are glued, the box is cut to form a top and bottom by cutting halfway through from the outside on the front and sides at a point that will "barely" intersect the bottom of the previous interior cut. The back is cut through entirely from the outside to provide a flat base for the hinges.

I enjoy wood and do not believe in cutting out all the "bad" parts. Here's an example of a "defect" that lends beauty and character to the finished product.

Yes, I made a few practice boxes before arriving at the final process!

As always, until next time, take care
