Kitchen Knick Knack Shelves

The knickknack shelves were a custom design. They were to be mounted above the kitchen cabinets and run the full length of the cabinets from the outside door around the kitchen and into the dining area. The color of the actual shelf ledge was to stand out while the rest blended in with the rest of the kitchen.

The shelf back board is made from local rough sawn pine. After getting the pine to it's finished shape and size it was sealed with shellac and then painted white to match the existing wall color. The shelf ledge pieces are made from local red oak. They were sealed with multiple coats of clear polyurethane.

There were lots of pieces to be coated and sealed before they could be joined. I kept counting to make sure I hadn't lost any along the way. Here the parts are suspended and layed out prior to starting the finish coats.

After all pieces were coated, the oak shelf ledges were attached to the painted white pine backer boards. All inside and outside corners were assembled in the shop so that all trimming to fit could be done on site on the straight sections. The task of hanging the shelves was a bit tedious since nothing is ever square, but all in all it turned out pretty well.
