Cedar Chest

Another month gone by already! Time to post another picture and pay the bills! My THANKS to everyone for their excellent responses last month. I will continue to try and improve my skills in many areas. Keep up the hints!

The project featured this month is a cedar chest that came to me for repair. Sounded pretty simple at the beginning, but then again, nothing is ever what it seems! Once again, I have no "before" picture for comparison!

If the cedar chest doesn't "look" like cedar, there's an easy explanation for that. It's not! The following photo shows some of the different parts and pieces of the cedar/walnut chest.

The inner box is cedar. The lid, legs, and drawer front are walnut. The front and sides have walnut veneer over cedar.

The project started out with a broken lid that needed repair. There was no way to simply glue the walnut lid pieces back together. The pieces had to be resawn to make them square and remove all evidence of the break. They were then planed to make them flat. Additional wood was added to make the "new" lid the same dimensions as the "old" one had been.

And then more fun began! After stripping and repairing the lid, the rest of the chest needed to be stripped and refinished to match! Most of the veneer also had to be replaced at that point! A lot of experimenting was done to get the color to match on the new and old parts. A new leg bracing system replaced the old one.

The front figured walnut veneer was rescued.

Sigh................... So what started out to be something seemingly simple grew into a rather involved project. As always, I was glad to finish and deliver it. This was truly another learning experience!

As always, until next time, take care
