Maple End Table

This is hopefully the first in several updates about what's happening in the wood shop. I figured this would serve several purposes, one being to remind me to take pictures before the item leaves the shop! I've also resolved to take a "before" picture in the future before I start a rebuild/refinish/repair project.

The last project to leave the shop was a small maple end table. It came to me in pieces that were covered in a dark thick stain. (Actually pieces are good - saves me some disassembly time!) I stripped, scraped, and sanded down to the bare wood (which was actually quite pretty maple). The legs were put in the lathe and virtually re-turned to remove all traces of the dark stain. All hardware went into a box for safekeeping (so far I've not lost anything!). The table top had some dark stains that remained after the original stain was removed (water rings?) that had to be bleached out. To make the top match the rest of the table after the bleaching process, an extremely light stain was applied before the clear sealer coats.

Applying clear sealer is always a challenge, increasing in difficulty with the number of parts involved. This table had a lot of them! Anyway, all the parts were sealed with 5 coats of wipe on polyurethane before final assembly.

This picture shows the table top and side, the drawer front, the turned legs, and just a bit of the apron. Oh, yeah, you can also see a dark place on the concrete floor where I knocked over a can of finish.

Down on a lower level, you get a better image of the table design.

I'm on to the next project now. Actually, I've usually got several going at any given time. I'll send out another Email as soon as one of them is complete!

If you don't want to receive this news letter in the future, just let me know. Feel free to pass it on to anyone you know who might find it interesting. All criticism (constructive or otherwise) is welcome and appreciated. This is not an attempt to excel at fine journalism, merely to pass on news about what's going on in the shop.

As always, until next time, take care
